The Pokémon video game series has grown from a pair of Game Boy titles into one of the best-selling game franchises of all time. Generation I (Red, Blue, Yellow) introduced the Kanto region and 151 Pokémon. Generation II (Gold, Silver, Crystal) added 100 more and the Johto region, plus breeding and day/night cycles.
Later generations introduced new regions (Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, Paldea), new mechanics like Mega Evolution and Dynamax, and hundreds more species. Mainline games now appear on Nintendo Switch (e.g. Sword & Shield, Scarlet & Violet), while spin-offs include Pokémon GO, Mystery Dungeon, and many others.
Each new game generation typically ties into new Pokémon TCG sets, with card art and characters reflecting the latest regions and species from the games.
